Murray Legge's Nature Chapel

The apparent simplicity and the connection to nature  of this open air chapel help to remind me of why I fell in love with architecture in the first place.  Murray Legge's non-denominational chapel is a beautiful structure whose basic tectonic quality draws one into the experience of the chapel while simultaneously directing attention to the surrounding forest, the sky, and the earth it rests upon.  As he developed the idea for the chapel Legge reportedly had the quote by Frank Lloyd Wright in mind stating, "I believe in God, but I spell it N-A-T-U-R-E."   To me this is a  perfect summation of the emotions evoked by this wonderful site.

Preservation is Sustainability

Throughout history the ideas comprising what should be the correct expression of architecture has varied depending on the spirit of the age.  The Modernists were looking for order in a newly globalized community, the postmodernists were (at a rudimentary level) reacting against what they saw as a negative cultural diffusion.  The architecture of today is what is needed and what is needed are jobs for the layman, housing for the layman's family, and above all environmental responsibility.  I haven't fooled myself into thinking that my beliefs regarding architecture are universal and won't be disregarded with time but I am sure that sustainable and responsible design is and needs to increasingly become the focal point of our era.  Historian's will (hopefully) look back at us and characterize us as the great turning point in environmental and communal responsibility that has disappeared since the industrial revolution.

Erin Moore's Watershed

Built for her writer mother in Oregon, Erin Moore's writing studio offers seclusion perfect for observation and contemplation.  The structure is wood with a steel frame and encourages wildlife interaction through tunnels beneath the floor and a water trough that comprises the first step.  Set in a wide expanse of untouched nature, the mood is set for the creation of a work that is deep and introspective.

MVRDV's Didden Village Rooftop Extension

MVRDV are known for their wild designs and out of this world concepts and their Didden Village project is no exception.  An addition/remodel of an existing residence, this Rotterdam, Netherlands home was given a noticeable facelift while providing a unique outdoor experience.

2012Architects' Havest Boon House

2012Architects' Harvest Boon House in the Netherlands was built almost entirely from scrap.  These are the types of projects that really get me thinking about the possibilities we pass up everyday.

Drew Mandel's 83a Marlborough Ave House

I have an affinity for reused and infill sites which is why Drew Mandel's house, built for himself, at 13' x 115' is one of my favorites.
